Energize Yourself This Summer by Ditching These 4 Winter Habits

Warmer temperatures are (finally) sweeping the nation with some consistency, and you know what that means! Barbecues, hikes, swimming and generally more time outside, away from our electronic devices.

But the transition from chilly parts of the year to oh-so-splendid spring and summer often comes with unwanted challenges.

Shaking off the chill and everything we did to adapt to it takes some time. We may find ourselves a bit foggy-headed or hesitant to break free of our cold-weather habits. Here are some leftover winter behaviors that could be lurking in your hibernation-mode mind.

1. Being a cabin-fevered homebody
Ugh, the cold. There are folks out there who really love it, but I am certainly not one of them. For anyone who can relate, you also may find it difficult to transition from being locked away at home, under a comfy blanket on the couch, to jumping into all the exciting activities summer offers. Don’t let the leftover winter fog dictate how you live your summer. Now is the time to shake that cabin fever, get out there, and explore.

2. Covering up out of habit or shame
There are many reasons people choose to cover their bodies with clothing, and most are universally valid. Yet, if you find yourself wearing bulky pants or long-sleeved shirts because you are concerned with your appearance, now is also the time to challenge this rationale! It’s taken me years and years and years to return to some of the carefree spirit I had as a youngster and bare my legs — cellulite and all — in a pair of shorts. Being cool and comfortable is worth it and my self-esteem has grown to outweigh my self-consciousness. If your self-talk is standing in your way to being comfy and having fun go ahead and talk back to it.

3. Forgetting our mindfulness
Being cooped up indoors for months at a time can limit how many new sights, sounds and smells we experience every day. Part of venturing outside more means having the opportunity to practice our present-focused skills and soak in our surroundings. Mindfulness has a multitude of benefits and there are few better chances to get mindful than being in the splendor of nature. Use the summer as a chance to hone your skills so you’re well-versed for the time when fall rolls back around.

4. Not scheduling adventures
One guaranteed way of breaking free of cabin fever habits is by scheduling activities into our days, weeks and months ahead. There’s no need to pressure yourself into extravagant adventures. Scheduling time alone in a park or checking out a local, free festival can get you out of your usual elements and stimulate your mind. Just think of how happy you will be making your mid-winter self by doing all the things you wished you could do back then. Get adventurous today and be thankful for the memories tomorrow.
