- Puffiness/bags under the eyes: The skin around the eye is very sensitive, so if you see puffiness and bags, it could be a sign of allergies.
- Rashes/red bumps: Allergies and infections can cause facial rashes; but, more seriously, a rash shaped like a butterfly that appears across the cheekbones and over the bridge of the nose can be a sign of lupus.
- Chin receding: If you think your chin is starting to recede, you may have have sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is a breathing disorder where you actually stop breathing during sleep for about 10 seconds.
- Yellow skin: Discoloring of the skin can mean several health problems. If your skin is pale, you may be anemic. Yellow skin can be a sign of liver disease, and bluish lips and nails can indicate a heart or lung problem.
- Sudden facial changes: A sudden change in the symmetry of the face can be a sign of stroke. If you also have numbness and difficulty speaking, call 911 immediately.
- Lesions on eyelids: One Danish study found that among people who develop soft yellow spots on their eyelids, 50 percent were at higher risk for heart attack and 70 percent were more likely to have hardening of the arteries than people who do not have eyelid lesions.
- Extra facial hair: 5 million women in the U.S. have facial hair on the upper lip, chin and along the jaw that indicates they have higher levels than normal of male hormones.
- Dry, flaky skin: Dry lips and skin can indicate dehydration. But it can also indicate a thyroid hormone problem or even diabetes.
